This is almost always some hardware or driver issue. Be sure your drivers
are up to date. Check for the latest drivers, especially for your graphics
card and soundcard but also all peripherals connected tot he system,
printer, scanner, anything else connected to the system. Visit each device
manufacturer's web site for this.
Place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup window appears, select "Check
System Compatibility." Any problem hardware or software it might turn up
could be the source of the issue.
Check Event Viewer, open Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open
Event Viewer, look for errors that correspond to when the problem occurred,
double click the error, the information contained within may give a clue as
to the cause of the problem.

Freezing as in it is completely unresponsive to any commands and you have to
cycle the power in order to use the computer, or it slows down
intermittently?
In addition to performing the steps Michael laid out, I would download
Ad-Aware or Spybot S&D and scan your computer for spyware. Lots of spyware
on a system will often slow it down.
