I have the same problem and I have read this article.
Rather than disable the feature, is there a way to FIX the
feature, or get it back on track so it is accurate?

Thanks

TweakUI for XP has a "Repair" menu. One of the options is to repair the
unread mail count. TweakUI and several other "Power Toys" are available
here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
