square character in notepad under windows XP

If I press ALT + 13 in notepad, I usually get the music
character. However on some windows XP, it shows a black
square characters.

Would someone out there please point me to some directions
to research for this problem?

If the font you're using doesn't have the full set of characters, sometimes
it will just have the squares. Some will just have blanks. To see what
characters the font has, you can look at it in Character Map.
