View Full Version : HELP! I installed 3 copies of XP Pro by mistake!

sylvia

How do I uninstall them and start over without wiping the
hard drive. The 1st time I upgraded from XP Home to XP
Pro, it seemes alright, however, none of my files (like
Word documents) and other programs carried over.

The 2nd time I tried, the files and programs were okay
but my modem wasn't recognized! I'm writing this from my
laptop because I can't access the web on my desktop.

The 3rd time, I was just trying to correct and
ininstall the other versions...argh!

PLEASE HELP! I'm a teacher and really need my desktop PC!

Thanks!

Sylvia

You need to find out which one you need to keep and delete the others
before you do that do a search on the net to make sure you are doing that
correctly

I am saying this to be helpful not to be snide by any means.
There is a way out of this situation but it would be better if
you took this to a professional. There used to be a saying
for this type of situation a few years ago which was:
Buy a box of Ding Dongs and a Six Pack of Pepsi and call
the kid next door.
Good Luck

Hi Sylvia,

Boot the one you want. Open Windows Explorer and remove (delete) the system
folders for the ones you don't want.

Start/run C:\boot.ini

Remove the lines referencing the unwanted installations from the [operating
systems] section. Click file/save and close.

Hi, Rick.

> Start/run C:\boot.ini

Thanks for that shortcut! I didn't think that would work and was about to
correct you - then I tried it! It works from the "DOS" window, too; if I
type just C:\boot.ini, Notepad automatically runs and loads boot.ini. (But
if I type: run c:\boot.ini, it doesn't work.)

I've been telling posters to use the Edit button in the Startup and Recovery
Settings window. That works, too.

Yep RC, it's a nice shortcut over the system settings buttons. I discovered
it was a lot quicker, not only in use, but in explanation. It doesn't matter
if folder options/view is set to see hidden/system files either (got tired
of explaining those steps - I wish it was not the default view).

What? Do you know whereof you speak?

Again, it seems that you are trying to create arguements without presenting
any facts. If you have a counterpoint, make it and present your supporting
facts. If not, I will not respond any further.
