Hi Fred,
Jim has given you steps to create a dos boot floppy, this is fine if you are
using the FAT32 file system or are doing a bios flash. It will not help you
access the hard drive if you are using NTFS. You can download the necessary
boot files for WinXP in NTFS here:
Home edition:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33290
Professional edition:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33291

Fred,
If, like me, you are just trying to get XP working, and
your hard disk is still operational, but you can't boot,
neither previous answer really helps. Using the DOS Boot
Disk doesn't give you access to your hard disk. Using the
downloads from Microsoft gives you diskettes that will
start Windows Setup, not access to your system. To quote
Microsoft:
"The Windows XP startup disk allows computers without a
bootable CD-ROM to perform a new installation of the
operating system. The Windows XP startup disk will
automatically load the correct drivers to gain access to
the CD-ROM drive and start a new installation of Setup.
You cannot upgrade from a Windows XP startup disk."
I had the problem described in KB320397, and needed a
boot diskette to restart my PC. The only way to get one
was to format a Diskette on another XP PC, then copy the
required files from the root directory of the boot disk
to the floppy. These files are ntldr, NTDetect.com, and
boot.ini. You may need to edit boot.ini for your system.
There are some others you may also copy, such as
MSDOS.SYS, IO.SYS, CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, but these
are not really required.
This will only work if your Windows XP directory is still
in tact on your hard disk. The bad news is that there is
NO SUCH THING AS A BOOT DISK (like the Windows 98
versions) IN WINDOWS XP. They don't exist. For real
serious problems, you have to use the recovery console,
Automated System Recovery, etc. I'll let you research
those. :)
