View Full Version : Disable web browsing ability

I need a way to disable the ability for users to access the internet. I
have removed IE from the desktop, but the users can access the internet by
opening the file manager and putting a web address in the navigation bar.
Our IS pushes a proxy server address (actually a filter and not a true
proxy server) out to all users who log on using Active Directory. This is
for about 20 machines in a domain of 1000+

TIA!!!!
John

Well, What our wonderful and great group critter Kelly
was pointing you to was a way to restrict what runs or doesn't
run.

What YOU, John, specifically want to do however would
require restricting IE I would guess. Even if they put in an
address into Windows Explorer; IE would have to come up,
right?

For news and Mail restrict Outlook or Outlook Express or
whatever you use.

Try IE first, then see if that does it.

OH, btw, what you want to do is also possible using the
router / routing server you use. - You would have to ask who
ever you got that from about how to do it; but like a Linksys
router can be told; "this computer with this IP address does
NOT get to play on the internet" and so it's restricted at the
router and no registry or admin changes have to be done at the
individual computer level.

Hope this all helps. :)

Hi John

I know you want a quick fix here, but if you administer an XP network, you
really need to have a basic understanding of the issues and relationships
when using restriction policies.

The following article is a bit long, but it will answer all of your
questions and give you the needed understanding to use this very powerful
tool.

Unauthorized Software:
