Hide Inactive Icons Button Gone/Missing

The button that you click to hide or show the inactive
taskbar icons (the group on the far left) is missing 'all
of a sudden'. It's been there for the past month - since
I got the new computer - now it's gone, and all the icons
are showing. How do I get the button back? Why did it
disappear?
