View Full Version : system tray does not show all items

My system tray does not consistently show all the icons.
When I reboot, the only one that is consistent is my
Norton antivirus. The little speaker icon to adjust the
volume rarely shows up, but it does show up once in
awhile. I know it is installed because my sound works,
but when the icon is not in the tray. I have to go into
the control panel to adjust the volume. I have check and
the "Place volume icon in task bar" box is checked.

I also have a pop-up stopper where the icon shows up only
about half the time, but I know it is running. If I try
to manually start it, it tells me it is already running.
I can launch the task manager and kill it, then manually
restart it and the icon will then show up.

This is a real pain, especially with the sound icon. What
is the deal?

Right-click on the Start Button, then choose "Properties", then click on the
"TaskBar" tab, then click on the "Customize" button (in the lower-right hand
of the page). In the list of "Current Items", left-click on each item you
want consistently showing, and select "Always show" from the pull-down list
(left-click on the down-arrow next to the current state of the item to
access the list of possible states.) Don't forget to click on "Ok" when
finished, then "Apply", then "Ok".

Kelly,

Thanks. The first option was to simply log out and then=20
log back in. This worked. All of my icons are now in the=20
system tray. Not the ideal solution, but it works. I was=20
not brave enough to try "If you are running XP SP1=20
uninstall UPnP from Add/Remove Windows Components." Not=20
sure what UPnP does and fear it might cause other strange=20
behaviors.
