After downloading the "critical" Windows update for
nVidia (using XP Home version), I cannot launch ANY
applications. Sometimes the apps start, but then shut
down immediately. Otherwise the computer appears to be
running all right.

Hi
Any Nvidia updates are only classed as 'recommended'. Try uninstalling =
the Nvidia update to see if that helps.

I can't even install/uninstall anything. As I said, I
cannot launch anything.

Try going into Safe Mode - Keep pressing F8 while the system is rebooting.
Then see if the programs will run. You should also be able to remove the
nVidia update in Safe Mode.
