taskbar problems

i need help trying to customize taskbar, u see i had some
icons on there before and now they r gone, dunno why,
such as the volume and battery status. i right click
taskbar, properties, and click customize next to (hide
inactive icons) and click on ones i want to always show
on task bar, then click apply and ok, but they r still
not on the taskbar...i also get current items and past
items on cust. notification window....if anyone can
understand me please email me...i would be very
grateful..thank u
