I don't want to scroll down to the double arrows at the
bottom of my favourites menu or within its subfolders to
find items that have "disappeared". How can I disable
this annoying feauture permanently?

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and uncheck
Use personalized Favorites
