Hi,
Using Windows XP (with all updates from MS).
My systems is slowing down. Lots of disk activity. Takes a few seconds for
any of the menu options under start to open.
I am running Freedom Firewall and Anti-virus.
My son has the same problem, and we are not on the same network.
Ideas?

All versions of Windows eventually start slowing down. To bring your
performance back up to par. First use a utility to clean out garbage files.
Then defragment your drive. And then try a tweaking utility to fine tune
the performance. Of course, I recommend XP Smoker. Available at
www.xp-smoker.com . There are many tweaking utilities out there find one
that's right for you.

Time for some "housecleaning" ? Empty Temporary Internet Files folder,
other temp folders, Recycle Bin, other files no longer needed. Then run
Clean Managerand Disk Defragmenter (a big slower-downer) in that order.
It's sooooo easy to forget.

Larry,
I agree with the previous posts about using msconfig to clean up your
system. I woul also recommend reviewing the Windows Update patches you
referenced. There was a problem with the first release of Critical Update
811493 causing a system to have poor performance if it was installed on a
computer with anti-virus software installed. I would suggest going to
Add/Remove programs and remove the patch, reboot and then go to Windows
Update and install it again. The current iteration of that patch on
Windows Update does not have the same problem that the initial release did.
Best regards,
Mike Truitt
