I have a Thinkpad R40, and there is a Combo key you can
use. It's probably a combination of the blue Fn key found
near the left Alt and Ctrl keys. You could also check
your IBM BIOS settings. I know in the R40, there is an
option to have the screen bright or dimmed when in battery
mode.
