I just set up a 'jpg' as a wallpaper, done a search for *.bmp, found
identical picture called Wallpaper1.bmp
Thus, as I had suspected the jpg is copied as 'Wallpaper1.bmp', it thus
appears that original 'jpg' is discarded.
Therefore if you want to recover the picture that is used on your desktop,
you need to go for the bmp picture.

The full path of the picture (bmp) is; (substitute my name (Patrick), with
yours whatever)
C:\Documents and Settings\Patrick\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Wallpaper1.bmp

or search for 'Wallpaper1.bmp'

(Just a guess, but maybe that's because Application Data folders are
hidden? Use the extended search options to do a proper search.)

Try: %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Internet Explorer
Wallpaper.bmp

If you're not familiar with environment variables, that's probably

C:\Documents and Settings\your-user-name-here\Application Data
\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp

hope that helped,

Did you set search to look for subfolders?

My own question on this topic: Using the answers here I just located a
photo that I set recently as a desktop image via the right-click
option. Was taken aback at the size. Isn't 6.5M kind of huge?

Some times, you can find wallpaper is installed in, C:\windows.
But you need to have the all hidden files operating.
Hope this helps.

All this appears only to work if the source was a 'JPG'. Tried a 'GIF'
(worked as wallpaper) but coudn't find any copy of it anywhere, (I'll
perhaps try renaming the source 'GIF').
