I have installed a new hard drive. My original modem speed (with .92 56K
modem) was 46-48 Kbps. Now I am only getting 28.8 - 31.2 Kbps. No changes
at my ISP. Gateway only informs me to uninstall all recently installed
hardware and software. Not hardly---after all the hours getting it all back
in.
If I believed this would solve my problem, I would be willing. But I am
hoping that one of you knowledgeable ones out there can give me some
direction to go. I am totally frustrated with this slow speed under which
I now am operating.

Have you used another dial-up # for your ISP? There may be a problem =
with the server that you usually connect to. Also check with your phone =
company and see if they have any problems with service, especially if =
you live in the area that was affected by the black out.

Same dial up number. No problems with phone service in our location. Since
this only happened at the exact time that I installed the new hard drive, I
believe it lies somewhere in that area. Thanks for your reply......

Perhaps you need to check with the manufacturer's website to see if
they have a more recent modem driver indicated for XP. Oddly,
windowsupdate came up with a new driver for my Conextant modem that
turned out to be about a year older than the one I had, and also ran
slower. I returned to the original.
Other than that, I use a little freeware utility called Cybertweak
that seems to help.
(Do you have both the modem and communication ports set for 56700?)

1. Is SP-1 installed ?
2. Did you do the Intel Chipset upgrade ?
3. Did you load any software (any at all - games, etc.) after the hard drive
upgrade that wasn't installed before ?
4. Is the HD larger than 132Gb ? (lots of goodies here that can effect other
hardware because this normally involves doing a BIOS update)
5. Reseat the modem card (same slot as before) and reseat the cable in the
modem and wall jack. You have it in the Line jack and not the phone jack
right ?
6. Did you install the same modem drivers or updated drivers when you
reloaded everything ? Did you reinstall any registry tweaks that you had
installed before ? Same processes / services running in background as
before ?
7. And last but not least... The telephone line itself may have a problem.
Did you add another phone or device to the phone line or change anything.
Even though you may not think adding another phone or device should have any
effect, it can. Unplug all other devices (phones, fax machine, answering
machines etc. ) and try it again. If nothing has changed - call the
telephone company and have them do a line test for noise. If its been
raining lately where you are, lots of telephone circuits degrade when lines
(and splices) get wet. The telephone company knows how to deal with that if
its a persistent problem on your line - they can apply what's known as
"sealing current". No, that not silicone, it's electrical charge applied to
circuit.
Lot's of things can effect this even though you may think everything is the
same and that nothing has changed. Obviously it has - so think what you did
and retrace your steps.

I did do the optimize with Cybertweak. I did
install SP-1. Have no idea about the Intel Chipset upgrade; don't even know
what it is, tho it is identity if Intel (R) 850 Chipset family. Does that
make any sense?
No new software that was not installed prior; in fact, some not yet
installed. I installed the Rosio CD creator which screwed up something else
so removed it. No games at all.
80Gb Hard drive.
Have not touched the modem card--I'm scared of doing anything else; at
least, I can work with the computer as it is.
The modem driver that is installed is GTW V.92, Version 3.3.13.1. I thought
maybe I needed an update driver--downloaded the 3.4.22 but when I attempt to
Run--Welcome--Next--I get a msg. saying No compatible hardware found. Have
written Gateway but no answer as yet.

As for the Intel chipset update, go to

and read. You can click on the 850 or 850E chipset on the right and read if you need/want to install it.
There are a lot of things that can cause a modem slow-down, so there is no one easy answer. Have you tried connecting it to another phone line or swapping out the modem ?
Maybe someone else has some more tricks to try but I would say, uninstall the modem driver and reinstall it. Be sure no AV software is running or any other programs.

Thanks to you all for the help. I think that I am just going to have to get
along with the slower modem speed. I just can not understand why it is so
much slower when the only difference from before was installing a new hard
drive.
I did see other (evidently) associated problems.
Can not put computer in sleep mode; get a message that the PS/2 Millineum
keyboard is preventing machine from entering standby. Don't understand that
either but I can live with it..........
