Explorer will not open Excel

Hey all - I've got a situation that is driving me crazy!
Let's say I have an open excel spreadsheet and I go into
Explorer to find and open up another excel spreadsheet.
I can not open it up from Explorer. I can open up files
from within excel, but if I have excel already open, and
try to open another excel file from Explorer, it will not
open. I don't get any errors - it's like I didn't even
double click to open the file up.

Any suggestions on how I can fix this before I pull my
hair out?
