This just made things worse, or should i just say awful.

It eliminated the welcome screen and the required step to select the
user (me), but the resulting desktop is completely devoid of all the
short-cut icons I had previously for me. I guess because the system
came up with plain old administrator as the user instead of me.

For clarity, my login was 'young' with no password. Originally, XP
booted up with no intervention required and stayed that way for 20
days. Then suddenly this AM, the boot up stopped at the welcome
screen requiring me to select 'young' as the user. Which I did and
all was okay - I had all the desktop icons - I just wanted to
eliminate the wasteful intervention. Un checking the box as you
suggested eliminated the intervention just fine, but I now do not come
up as 'young'. I went back and checked the box again and the next
boot stopped as before, but when I entered 'young', I got all my
desktop icons back.

Now then, I'll not worry right now how all this happened in the first
place, but how do I set my boot up so I come up as 'young'
automatically?

BTW, when I enter your CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2, I see four users =

Administrator Administrators
ASPNET Users
YOUNG Administrators
Guest Guests

Thanks

Hi, I might suggest you download and install TWeakUI for
XP, There is a setting there for automatic logon and you
can set it for who you like to auto logon. I,m sure
someone will have the time to solve this problem, but
this is the simplest for now.

TweakXP did it. Thanks.

Now if I can only remember to do that when this 'up jumped the devil'
hic-cup happens again! Should I ask how this happened in the first
place?

Why download what you can do from the GUI?

As long as you enter the correct information when you were prompted for a
username and password, i.e. the user name you wanted automatically logged
on, and left the password (in this case) blank, it should have logged you on
to that account. This setting in CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 does the same
thing and changes the same settings as the Autologon feature of TweakUI.
