Updates,downloads all crash on install

I have been having problems installing patches and this morning I downloaded
several shareware programs that I wanted to try. Every program would crash
when I tried to install them.

I don't know how to trouble shoot this. Could someone give me a place to
start. I obviously have corrupted system files, but what do I do? Thanks for
