I went into Control Panel and disabled this obnoxious program. But it
seems every time I re-boot the messenger icon re-appears in the system
tray. I have to run msconfig/startup tab and uncheck the messenger box
over and over again!

Also every time I re-boot after unchecking messenger I get the system
configuration box. How do I prevent this? I already ran the vb code
from Doug's web site and nothing has changed......?

If you installed MSN Messenger, rather than the update for Windows
Messenger, then you'll see this behavior. They are different programs, and
my fix was only intended for Windows Messenger.

If you are talking about the IM program you have to go to two places to
disable it.
1. Start Outlook Express.
Go to Tools -> Options and select the "General" tab.
Uncheck "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger
Check all of the Oks and shut down OE.

2. Start Outlook
Go to Tools -> Options and select the "Other" tab.
Uncheck "Enable Instant Messaging in Outlook."
Click all the appropriate Oks and shut down Outlook.

When you restart Windows, WM should not start.
Hope this is what you're after. Jeff

Doug, this is the Messenger that came with XP.

Then see www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Disable/Remove Windows
Messenger. This will allow you to prevent it from running, and/or remove it
from the system entirely.

If it doesn't work, we'll follow up on it. Note: For SP1 systems, the
application will generate an error about unregistering a particular OCX
file, if you choose to remove Messenger. This is normal, and has no effect
on the removal.
