How do I stop Pop ups on my XP Internet explorer

Hi wanting to know if anyone can help me stop pop ups..I
bought what was called MESSAGEKILLER and worked for 4
weeks paid $25 over the net and now I am increasingly
getting more..I have tried to find there site and nothing
is forthcoming I have heard that you can limit the pop ups
directly in Windows but I cannot find where to start. I am
computer illeterate but will try if have directions.

Download & install the google explorer toolbar. It contains
a popup blocker that can be configered to block all,
default, or allow certain popup's.
I use McAfee online virus scanner which uses popup's as
part of the update function. I alloes the updates but blocks
any others.
