I have a problem with my system. When booting system, the
startup screen often does not appear, instead a flashing
cursor appears in upper left corner of monitor. I have
retightened connections and run defrag, but this does not
improve anything.

Joe,
Are you saying that on some occasions the BIOS start-up screen doesn't show
at all, and there's no POST 'beep'?
Incidentally, this advice applies mainly to Desktops, not Laptops.
Has your system been moved recently? Sometimes a slight flexing of the
chassis can occur, and it would need the casing to be opened up and the
seating of all the components checked. It tends to be video cards are the
main culprit, but double check the RAM and the CPU and any PCI cards while
you're there.
Be sure to take anti-static precautions or ask someone with experience to
check this for you.
In addition, if any strange 'beep' codes have been heard at start-up, or if
any error messages have appeared, post back to let us know.
Hope this helps.

What about chkdsk?
This could also be a driver issue. Possibly the video driver.
