Icons in system tray on a laptop

I'm using Windows XP on a Comapq X1000 notebook.
I just can't reactivate the function "Hide inactive icons
in the taksbar (system tray). I click the option in the
setting window but it just doesn't work.

All icons always show and the little double arrow
desapeared.
