Kelly, I was looking at some of the postings and I scrolled down to where
you had a link to the 10 most FAQ for XP. I read the faq and #9 turnes out
is one of my main frustrations, so I went to d/l and install the patch but I
get a message that the exe file is not a valid win32 application. (re: the
fix for outlook express: OE6 xp sp1)

Can you tell me what is wrong please?

Thanks

Try clearing your cache.

This is what the contents of this text file is

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]

@="Shortcut"

"EditFlags"=dword:00000001

"NeverShowExt"=""

"Shortcut"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile]

@="Shortcut to MS-DOS Program"

"EditFlags"=hex:01,00,00,00

"NeverShowExt"=""

"Shortcut"=""

What is the exact message you get and exactly when do you get it.

Says [filename.exe] stored in [location] is not a valid win32 application.

The location is where it was downloaded to on my harddrve and the filename
is q330994.exe

sent it to you as you instructed, as an attachment .

You canb type
stop 0x0000008a
into Help and it should return 10 articles from MS web site. None seems an
exact fit.

Go to oca.microsoft.com and they'll examine they'll for free.

Wrong thread. Ignore previous.

I had thought it was a file from Kelly's site. But this is coming from MS.
(Wish I hadn't told you to send it to me - it blocked my mail at a critical
time). I often don't read entire posts, just scan them and didn't notice the
change from shortcuts to OE.

Your file works fine here.

It is not corrupt. I would suggest a virus scan. And you have tried
rebooting and also cleaning out your temp files. Type in Start Run
temp (System Temp Folder - when noone is logged in))
and %temp% (your temp folder)

Terribly sorry it messed with your mail server David. I have AVG installed
and it seems to keep me free of viruses...however I seemed to have slowed
down when opening applications, java (like pogo) gives me problems.....will
try mcaffe shortly however the free online virus scans like trend micro says
I'm clean.

ahhh well.....the pitfalls of computing :)

Type cmd in Start Run, drag the file into the window and press enter. This
fix it. Sometimes this helps when XP has just glitched.

Typed Cmd into run box, dragged the file into the run box, dos window
opened, had to drag the file into the dos window and pressed enter.....same
darn message again.

(This has happened before...infrequently.....with other files....never found
a way around it).

How about safe mode.

This happened to me once after I was playing with runas. Though it worked in
cmd.

But Right click and choose RunAs and try it without Protect My Computer
(prevents registry writes)

Ran it the following ways in reg and in safe modes:
run as with protection
run as without protection
run as administrator with password all to no avail, however in safe mode I
got the following messages:

run as : a device attached to the system is not functioning properly

and as admin: this program can not be run in safe mode.

And justr type in command prompt

Type

cmd /c tasklist >"%userprofile%\desktop\tl.txt"
and post the text file that appears on your desktop.

The program doesn't sound corrupted in safe mode (as admin). It sounds like
it working.

Try this.

HSCH

Not much fun I know.

Ok first of all I'm a bit lost as that page gives more than 1 or 2 options
as to how to trouble shoot. Below is a copy of the content of the tl.txt
file on desktop after a normal boot up ( I say normal as it's the one I
usually use as in the past I had to disable some items and cannot seem to
get them to disappear from the list so I continue to boot up in the same
mode as when I disabled them). Ok I'm starting to see a light here LOL
(yeah DUH) Let me reboot in "normal" mode and see if that file works.

Ok I reset the selective start up to normal and this is the resulting tl.txt
file (if you can be more specific about which way to do the trouble
shooting on that link you gave me it would be helpful).

David can you please be a bit more specific as to which of the various ways
it says to TS the problem?

Thanks,

Doug

Do you have two video cards, a matrox and an nvidia.? nvsvc32 is a =
nvidia prog and hgcctl95 is Matrox prog.

Rundll32 is an app that starts many other apps. It's essential to =
windows (eg it starts control panel applets). But can also start nasty =
programs. Just with it's name in the list it's not possible to tell what =
it does. Some nasty's use this name but put the file in a non standard =
directory - so one may have legit and non legit versions of this. Still =
probably a normal entry.

These are the only 4 that are questionable. I'm not saying anything is =
wrong with these - just give the files a quick check to make sure they =
are expected on your machine.

I assume all the files starting CT are Soundblaster files. Most are.

As to MSConfig.

Clear Startup items (on the General Tab), Reboot, Does it work.

Clear Win.ini and System.ini. Reboot Does it work.=20

System Services is harder. Installs won't work with out some being =
enabled. On Services tab disable all non MS services. Reboot. Does it =
work.

Then turn off all services but Windows Installer Service and Remote =
Procedure Call (WIS needs RPC). Your computer will be very sick as not =
much will be working by now. Does this help.

Reenable everything.

David I'm back online..... Sorry I panicked and mailed you offlist from
other machine....

Went to services from start menu......do I need to re-enable all to
automatic and then start svc? or is there a way to do them all at once?

Just sent you a mail. Full details in mail (not all are automatic). But =
if MSCONFIG can't do it then services is one by one. But I've given you =
where MSConfig stores the list of ones it disabled and a list from my =
machine of default status.

Disabling SSDP service and Universal Plug n Play service to cure the =
icons.=20

I look at the services list. CSV's are fine.

Seems I (another duh) downloaded the wrong file......got the right one and

Excellant. That hta I sent you I use for viewing my bank statements, =
that come tab delimited. Just had to change field names to make it a =
Services lister.

See my web site at www.mvps.org/serenitymacros and the 2000 Word Tips =
page, the Macro Finder page, and Serenity Macro page foe examples of =
that technology on a web page. HTA are web files that aren't restricted =
by security (so that can do useful things). They are text files like all =
web pages.
