Ever since I installed Windows XP I get those "messenger
service" pop-up windows. How do I shut them down?

Thank you!

Turn on the internet connection firewall or install a third party firewall.
For more info, see the windowsxp.messenger newsgroup.

Most likely you are talking about the "messenger Service" in Windows XP.

You can just enable XP's built in firewall to stop them. -

Ron,

One way is to disable the item in the Startup tab with msconfig.

Greetings --

Mike, since when did one control services via Msconfig? It's
certainly not listed on my system. (Not that I'd ever advise
disabling a service to plug a security hole.)

Bruce,

The services tab is included with the Windows XP version of msconfig.
There is a great checkbox at the bottom of the UI that allows the user to
hide all of the Microsoft Services and show only third-party services.
Spyware and malicious software will load themselves into this area as well
as running through the startup tab.

Feel free to review the functionality, it is pretty cool and its portable.
I have used it on Windows 2000 computers to help trouble-shoot issues as
well.

Best regards,

Ah! I was looking at the Startup tab. Thanks. (Although I'll
probably forget about it. ;-} I've never really gotten in the habit
of using Msconfig - I've always either edited the registry directly,
or used the Control Panel Services applet.)

Bruce,

No worries at all and I know the feeling. I am still mourning the passing

And the irony is, Sysedit.exe is still with us! Go figure!
