Desktop Wallpaper won't load

I have a dell inspiron 8100 laptop with Windows XP
professional loaded. It was running fine, but now the
wallpaper will not load. I get a little icon in the top
left corner. I have tried changing the wallpaper, but
nothing displays. All I have is a blue background. I
have also tried tiling, entering and stretching. Nothing
helps. Please help?? Thanks.
