Zip file support

I have 2 WinXP Pro - SP1 machines. When viewing a folder containing zip
files in Windows Explorer, 1 machine displays a "normal" view - I just see
zip file entries in the file, or right-hand, pane of Explorer.

But the other machine, shows each zip file as a sub-folder of the folder I'm
viewing, in the folder, or left-hand, pane of Explorer.

The second way is an interesting idea, but I don't like it because every
time I navigate to such a folder (one that contains zip files), I see a
delay (presumably while Explorer figures out how to display it all). This
delay can be anywhere from 1 to 7 or 8 seconds, perhaps depending on how
many zip files are in the folder.

Does anyone know how to turn this feature off?? I've looked in folder
options, in WinZip help, in Windows XP help, but I've found nothing
relevant.

I do believe I understand what your saying.
The 'zip' files that show in the left pane are ones that you have previously
accessed (explored, extracted etc.,), thus it is that the system has a
record of them being folders rather than files (and keeps a cache of them if
extracted).

I dont know exactly how to change the matter, but I guess that a 'Disk
Cleanup' might be the answer.
If above didn't work, I'd try deleteing all *.tmp files from machine (after
reboot), though of course this wouldn't be an official method.

Does seem odd though, don't it, (some do, some don't !).

Well, the PC that is doing this is new, and I just copied lots of files to
it over the network. So these "zip folders", or com,pressed folders as XP
seems to be referring to them, have not been opened before on this machine.

That's why I was thinking it's an XP setting, or maybe a WinZip setting ...

In case anyone is interested, the way to disable this "feature" is to
unregister the file zipfldr.dll (in the system32 folder). However, this
also removes XP's ability to look in zip files when searching for files ...
so, pick your poison ;-)
