Somehow, a xxx website put something in my computer and now
every time I open Internet Explorer, at least 10 XXX
Pop-Ups come up. Also, pictures on other websites, such as
msn.com, cnn.com and nfl.com, are switched to nasty
pictures linked to a XXX website. Any ideas on how to
stop this without formatting the hard drive and starting
from scratch? I had to download and use Netscape just to
avoid all that.

These programs will get rid of the junk for you.

To simplify the process of keeping the Temp and Temporary Internet folders
cleared, use this free program: Empty Temp Folders. I've been using is for
several years.

Your PC also is probably loaded with Spyware. Download and run Spybot -
it's also free.

John,

The recommendations are stellar and I personally use SpybotSD on my home
systems. I would also recommend using msconfig to clean out the unwanted
items from your "Startup" group.

And be sure to update and run your anti-virus often (at
least weekly) and same for Windows Update.

And run a firewall, I like Zone Alarm (free version)

Ad-aware 6 is probably one of the best at detecting and shutting down
spyware.
Also Zone Alarm is #1 as a firewall to stop the next attack of spyware

Sorry to jump in this but I am having the exact same problem and I have
tried absolutely everything that that has been suggested here, over and over
again and I am getting nowhere fast!

The only that I haven't tried is the msconfig thing that you suggested. I'm
not sure if this is relevant or not but I downloaded a program called
TechfactsXP and that can clean the registry for me, but I'm unsure what is
absolutely needed in the registry. The impression that I get from the
explanation of this feature of the program that what it is showing me is
stuff that I can safely delete but I really want to be sure before I do
that.

I could do with some serious help here.

Thankyou, NiC

If you want a registry cleaner, why not use the one Microsoft supplies? It
has a "restore" feature in the unlikely case there are problems.

RegClean 4.1a

I've used the Spybot program, also I've been using AdAware for ages and
neither of these two got rid of the ads. I was also told to get another
program called HijackThis which I've just posted the log of to at a forum by
the makers who can help get rid of the problem, if its there.

I like the idea of being able to do this myself though without the problem
of freaking about things not working properly afterwards. Is this what the
RegClean will do? Will it only clean spyware type registry entries, or all
other uselss ones. I noticed some entries in the log file of the above
mentioned product which came from an ISP that I had and I am no longer
using, yet there are entires in there still from their rubbish. Will the
Microsoft product get rid of these also?

Sorry for so many questions, I've never experienced a problem like this
before.

Regclean cleans your Registry of unnecessary entries that were created when
you installed or uninstalled programs on your computer. This release of the
utility fixes a few problems and creates an "undo.reg" file so that you can
undo changes you inadvertently make to the Registry.

Are you using the Advanced mode in Spybot? Do you have every box checked in
the File Sets screen?
Do you have the latest version of Spybot (1.2) and all the latest updates
for it?

Regclean sounds good.

I haven't used the Advanced mode as it suggested that until I was totally
familiar with the program I should stick to the normal mode. I have 1.2 and
before I did the original scan after downloading it I made sure it was all
updated.

I have been told to delete a few entries from my registry, re-start in Safe
Mode and then delete some other thing and that should fix it.

Is it okay if I send this information that I've been given here so you or
someone else can tell me whether that its okay to do?

Use the Advanced mode. I delete everything Spybot finds. Everything.
And, I have never had a problem.

As far as the registry entries you've been told to delete, I wouldn't be
able to say, because I am not sitting in front of your computer. I would
hope that the person who told you to delete them has.

Okay, that says it all. :) I posted a log of them to the a forum run by the
people who made the program, so they did at least see the entires. Still
worried about doing it though. :(

Would it be safe to say that anything I don't use or have anymore would be
safe to delete from the registry, using Regclean?

Sorry for all these questions, I've never looked into any of this stuff
before.

There are thousands of entries in the registry, delete the
wrong ones and your system will fail to boot or applications
will fail to run.

Programs such as AdAware and SpyBot and others are less
likely to remove good and needed registry entries than you
will if you just start to delete thinks you "think" you
don't use.

I've been using Microsoft's RegClean for 4 or 5 years now beginning with
Windows 98, then 98SE, and now XP Pro. I have never had a problem with my
PC after using it, and I run it at least weekly. I also run SpyBot at least
weekly.

That's what I'm worried about. I've just used Regclean and I didn't like
that it didn't show what it was fixing. It said that it could take 2-30
minutes to check the registry but it was all done, fixed and closed down in
about 2 minutes!

The only entries that I have deleted without the advice of others is ones
that relate to programs that I know I don't have anymore. For instance I
uninstalled Gozilla a day or so ago and have turned off my pc a number of
times since yet even as of tonight there where still entires relating to
right-click menu items and other such things that directly related to
Gozilla.

What got me the most was that there were entries in there which were related
to an ISP that I was with, the biggest phone company in Australia, that
hadn't been deleted even though I uninstalled the 'stuff' that had been put
on my computer when you sign up to use their internet service. The
description that HijackThis gave me was that it was related to
spyware/adware type material! I only noticed today that there was still a
menu item in my start menu.

Okay, I've rabbled on long enough, sorry. ;)

Did you right click the files RegClean created after the scan and click
Edit? It will show you what was cleaned out.

Your best bet for Zone Alarm is to read the help file or go through the
thorough walkthrough when you first install ZA.

You're getting pinged a lot. Everybody does. That's why you need a
firewall. You are going to have to educate yourself about ZA's operation.

I think I was just suprised at how often the 'pinging' was happening.

Thanks for all your help Joe, hopefully I won't have to bother you anymore!

It's no bother at all. That is what these newsgroups are for. Once you
get used to Zone Alarm, you'll find it's really easy to use.

A couple of years ago, when the Code Red virus hit and I was
on cable, Zone Alarm maxed out the 500 hits it can log in
one session in 5 minutes.

I just set ZA to run in "silent mode" where it logs
activity. I only get a pop-up from ZA when something tries
to send that I have not approved.
