I tried to restore my system to the first listed restore point. Crunch
crunch crunch ... then reboot ... then "sorry, cannot restore to that
restore point" (or something like that).

Retried ... with every listed restore point. No good.

Does restore work with XP Home? If not, why do they put it in there?

Hi Lester,

It works fine in XP Home, but if it gets buggered up (and yours has), the
only thing you can do is stop it and restart it. This will lose all existing
retore points (they don't work anyways), but should get it restarted.
Start/run services.msc, locate the SR service and open it. Stop it and set
the startup to disabled. Reboot, then reverse the steps to reenable it.
