It sounds as if you have XP Pro. By default it forces all
incoming connections to use the Guest account, and by
default, the guest account is turned off.

If you want XP Pro to not fortce the use of the Guest
account, but rather a method more similar to all previous
versoins of windows;
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type Explorer
- Click Tools
- Click Folder Options
- Click the View Tab
- Scroll to the bottom
- Uncheck Use simple file sharing

Now go back and reshare those files and folder. On the
Sharing Tab, verify the contents of the Permisions button,
and check out the contents on the security tab.
