Anna,

a lot of questions in this newsgroup are there because people
mistakenly enable the firewall on internal LAN connections.
Don't do that.

The firewall is only useful on a connection that leads directly
into the Internet, i.e. on a modem dial-out connection or on a
connection to a router, like for a DSL or Cable Internet
connection.

Uh, that answer only applies to XP's built-in firewall, named ICF.
Other firewalls (e.g., ZoneAlarm) are more flexible than ICF.
