The 2 different installs are seen as 2 seperate machines on the domain.
Althoough there is only one physical machine, there are 2 logical machines.
Joining the domain creates a machine account for the machine.
The machine name and it's SID are held in the machine account.
The SID is a unique Identifying Number which the Domain uses to identify
machines,
The problem is both installs have the same name, they have different SIDs.
When you boot up the second instell, the Domain Controller will think the
machine is essentially an imposter, with a name he recognises,
but with the wrong SID.
By re-joining the Domain under the second install, you associate install2's
SID with the machine name in the machine account.
But then install1 will not be recognised.
The fix would be to give each install a different name.
Then, there would be 2 machine accounts in the domain,
each with it's own name and SID.
Perhaps have thee machines named something like:
Install1: MY-XP-PC-01
Install2: MY-XP-PC-02
Then the 2 'logical' machines can co-exist on the domain.
