View Full Version : Calculating Folder Sizes

I'd like to view sizes of Directories the same way that
individual files are displayed. Even for directories on
my server. Without having to individually open the
properties of each folder. Any advice?

Well if you hover your mouse over a file, a tool tip is displayed that
contains information about the file (i.e. size). That method works fine but
it takes too long for a tool tip to be displayed, so...

When in Windows Explorer, simply highlight the file whose size you want to
see and look at the bottom of the window (in the statusbar the info in those
aforementioned tool tips is also displayed there.)

If the statusbar is off:
Click View -> Status Bar

Best of luck,

This cannot be done with the Windows Explorer. You would have to go
for a third-party file manager that supports this.
Be aware of that this feature may slow down file management as the
folder sizes have to be recalculated each time that you refresh the
folder/file list or change the folder.

Try using a utility program called treesize. You can search google for it.
It works quite nicely.

Greetings --

There's a useful little shareware utility called Disk Frontier
that can provide the information you want.

Go to www.v-com.com and in the products download box select Power Desk Pro.
At the Pro screen on the right is a spot to download a free version. I
believe that Power Desk is far and away better than Windows Explorer. The
free version is probably all you'll ever need and there is no time limit and
no significant nag screen.

If you're looking for a system suite, I also recommend their System Suite 5.
