Access 97 slow on XP

I have an XP home machine with Access 97 installed on it.
My database connects to an SQL (version 6.5) database on
an NT4.0 service pack 6 server. My database hangs when
connecting in this way. If however I transfer the
database to a windows 98 machine with a quarter of the
memory of the XP machine the link works fine.

Any Ideas?
