View Full Version : Trial Windows XP time has elapsed, now can't restart

My trial installation of Windows XP has elapsed and I
can't start my PC without getting the popup message that I
need to buy the real version of XP. Then it just shuts
down. Windows 98 was on my system before installing the
trial XP version. Did this trial Windows XP installation
wipe out Windows 98?
I've tried to re-install Windows 98 with the appropriate
startup diskette and the CD-ROM that came with my Dell
computer, but it won't work properly. I'm also worried
that I might need to format the hard drive.
I'm not yet ready to buy the full Windows XP to install,
but I may be forced to. Any ideas?

Well, you had plenty of time to make up your mind about XP.
At this point, you'll need to do the following:
How to Uninstall Windows XP and Revert to a Previous Operating System
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=3Dkb;en-us;303661
How to Use the Fdisk Tool and the Format Tool to Partition or =
Repartition a Hard Disk
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=3Dkb;EN-US;255867
1. Delete the Windows XP partition.
2. Create a new partition.
3. Format the new partition.
4. Install your desired Operating System.

Perhaps he messed with the date setting? I managed to use up my activation
time less than an hour by instaling WinXP on a PC which had the wrong date
set on the mobo. When I corrected the date WinXP told me I had to activate
it immediatly. Fortunately I had the network running and was able to do so.
