I can't ping the current IP of a computer. I have 2 pcs running XP, pc
1 is connected to the web via cable modem, pc 2 is a stand alone.
Brought a 4 port router to connect to the cable modem and then to each
computer. Ran the network wizard , gave them unique names and
configured both machines for the same work group. Pc 2 could ping own
IP but not pc 1. Pc 1 couldn't ping either pc 2 or self.

Problem 2, cable modem currently connected to pc 1 via crossover cable
and works properly. When trying to connect modem to router neither the
crossover nor a patch cable will work.

The most likely cause is an improperly configured firewall program on
Pc 1. Disable and un-install ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security,
etc. Then go to Start | Run | Msconfig | Startup and disable any
remnants of the firewall.

Connect the cable modem to the router's WAN port, not to one of its
LAN ports, using a regular patch cable.

Could this be XP's firewall protection? When setting up pc 2 networking
I was asked if I wanted to setup firewall protection, I declined. I
wasn't asked that question on pc 1. How do I configure or uninstall
XP's firewall?
