I have a folder in windows that collects strangly named
files and I would like to find the reason for this
folder,C:\windows\prefetch.

Said is quite normal,
The folder is used as a sort of 'cache' by XP, whereby data relating to your
most commonly used programs is stored for quicker retrevial.
Some people recomend that the folder should be emptied occasionally.
As I understand, this would do little harm except that it would
(temporarily) take your (often used) programs to take a little longer to
load.

A. The Prefetch folder contains information regarding the optimal =
disk layout
of program files so that they launch quicker. You may delete =
all those files,
but XP will rebuild that folder so that your computer runs as =
efficiently
as possible.
