volume control in taskbar

all of the sudden, the volume control icon wont show up
anymore. whenever i go to the control panel and go into
sounds and audio devices, i try to check the box that says
display the icon in the taskbar, but it says that the
program isnt installed. what can i do someone please
help...

i have a new computer that CAME with windows xp home
edition
