I am trying to connect two computers together, one
running XP Professional and one running XP Home Edition.
Both NIC's seem to be working properly and there is a new
Cat 5e Patch Cable connecting the two machines, but it is
not being detected. The only network component that
doesn't seem to be installed on either machine is the "32-
Bit PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter". Is this called something
else in XP or do I need to add it?

HI,

Did you check if your nic's are installed in device
manager under network adapters??
did you use the network wizard to connect them or did you
configure manually??

DON'T put on the firewall between the local network
computers because than the network will MOST of the time
not work....

Did you try to ping the other computer??

otherwise these two websites will be able to help you
further:

hope to have helped you

Peter

Thanks. Yes the drive manager looks ok, I can't find any
problems. The one thing I have noticed is that when I
try to run the Belkin CD that came with the PCI Card, it
says that there is no on-board LAN. Also the two green
lights on the network card are not on.

Any ideas?

If you are connecting the machines together directly you need to be using
what's called a "crossover" cable. Are you?

In response to your question about "Cross-over Cable", I
do not have one. I have a Belkin Cat5e Patch Cable
#R7J304 - it doesn't say Cross-Over anywhere
on the cable.

So my question now is, can I use this cable to connect to
a hub/switch? I am thinking about buying a Belkin 5 port
and connect the two computers running XP to that, this
would also allow the sharing of my DSL connection and
allow for any expansion later on.

(To give you more info, I am doing the module 70-270
towards the MCSE, so I am trying to create a mini-network
at home to help with the course.)

Thanks very much for your help.

Scott a cross-over cable is used to connect 2 PC WITHOUT a hub or router, A
Patch Cable ie"straight" is used to connect 2 pc's WITH a hub or router.

Yesy you can use your cabel with a HUB
