View Full Version : dial up connections not allowed in XP Pro??

today I upgraded my OS to XP Pro from XP Home. (This was
so my laptop could access the network at the college
where I'm teaching this year.)

The dial-up connections I had created did not transfer
with the upgrade, and I cannot create dial up
connection. When going through the wizard to create a
new connection "manually," the option for a dial-up
connection is grayed out.

I have verified the modem is installed and working
properly.

The rasphone file exists, but I cannot open it. I can
Error 711, Cannot load remote access connection manager.

Any clues or suggestions?

Fred

See www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 87, Left Column, Dial-up
Modem or PPPoE is Unavailable for a small REG file that will correct this
issue for you. Download the REG file and save it to your hard drive.
Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be
viewed in Notepad.

Off topic question... how the heck do you and Kelly know all these fixes?!?
Like seriously, I know more about computers than anyone I personally know,
and I can kinda make sense of some basic registry things, but how do you two
know *that* much about the OS? (Maybe since I haven't had any
post-secondary training on computers I'm just making a big deal of it.)

Hi Pcyr,

Some of it is just research, tracking down obscure articles, digging through
some of the ADM (policy files) from Windows itself, digging through posts on
other forums and seeing if a "lead" can be found. And some of it is
actually trying to duplicate a user's problem, if its a new one, actually
seeing if we can break it and then fix it (have had a few format/re-installs
from this <G>). Sometimes we team up to tackle a problem, and the fix.
And there's always reading here. Even if we don't know the answer to a
post, we follow the thread, and see if an answer does come out (Kelly's
better about this than I am). Then the info either goes on the web sites,
or in a 'canned' reply, for future reference.

Neither Kelly, nor I, have any secondary training in computers. We've both
learned what we know on our own, and with the help of other MVP's and
posters who have been willing to help us track down problems by sending REG
files, log files and the like, testing new utilities after we've tested them
as thoroughly as we can, and of course, digging, digging, digging for the
answer :)
