View Full Version : Problem opening multiple HTML files - ZoneAlarm traps attempt

I am getting a problem under Windows XP Pro regarding the opening of
multiple HTML files via Windows Explorer. I'm not sure when this behaviour
started, or if it has always existed.

Under my normal 'limited' user logon, ZoneAlarm comes up with an alert: "Do
you want to allow Windows Explorer to access .......?", where .....
represents file name. Technical Info gives destination IP as 0.0.0.0:HTTP

If I allow the program to continue it action, the multiple files are opened
in separate IE windows, as expected. If I do not permit the action, then
*only* a single file opens (in an IE window).

I get a similar ZoneAlarm alert message when I try to open multiple HTML
files from within a ZIP file, except that the program referred to is the
WinZip Executable rather than Windows Explorer. However, if I do not permit
the action, the first file opens, but I get an error message for the others
as follows: "There was a problem sending the command to the program", with
the msgbox title being the name of the file concerned.

As if this was not puzzling enough, I tried the same tests under an
'Administrator' level login - in all tests the multiple IE windows
containing the HTML files were opened without any ZoneAlarm alert(s) being
triggered.

Interestingly, this issue only occurs with HTML type files (HTM, MHT, HTML).
With other files types I do not have any problem in opening multiple files
with a single command.

BTW, ZoneAlarm settings look to be the same for both logons. Also, FWIW, I
had no such problems under Windows 98SE.

Hopefully someone has a clue as to what is going on here!

TIA

Rob.

sounds to me like ZA is working just the way it's supposed to...asking to
let WINDOWS explorer have access and letting INTERNET explorer do it's
thing, if you say no to WINDOWS explorer you get nothing, INTERNET explorer
on the other hand you have probably given permanent permission to have
access these type of INTERNET files.

naddame,

Further updates on this issue:

I just checked again and found that the firewall alert is now triggered
under my user defined administrator logon (which I'd checked on earlier) as
well as under my limited user logon - very strange :-(

Re. your comments - I stupidly forgot to mention that the HTML reside on my
C drive, so there is no Internet or network access involved here. As you
deduced, I have set IE to have automatic access to the internet & my local
network.
