I have an HP xt973 running Windows XP SP1, Zone Alarm Pro
Firewall, Microsoft Wireless Router and a Speedstream DSL
modem.
This has been happening off and on at different intervals
since I installed the network. I go to get online and it
says no connection, at one point my Network Connections
folder was empty-I had to reboot to get it working again,
when I open the Microsoft Broadband Utility it says there
is no internet connection. I have reset the router twice
now and did a system restore once to try to correct these
issues. Also when I go to get into the utility that
allows me to change the settings on the base station it
keeps saying page not available after I type in my
password. (Its supposed to let me in to check and change
the configs for the base station).

I need help, I have tried to register my base station
with Microsoft but every time I sign up for a Net
Passport it hangs and says Temporarily Unavailable, Try
Again Later.

Thanks in Advance,

Neo

Do you have the latest updates for your wireless router? I've also seen
problems with networking and XP's SP1 posted on the web (did you install SP1
before you setup your network/Internet connection?). I don't think it's
your firewall because of the "dropping connections" problem you noted. The
firewall would block traffic, not drop the network connection. If possible,
try accessing your network/Internet connection with another "good" computer.
If the "good"computer has the same problems as your XP computer then:

First, I'd make sure all the hardware is working ok. Check the link lights
on your router and your NIC card. Do you have another computer networked
together? Turn off your dsl modem and see if you can isolate the problem
(is it your Internet connection, dsl modem, router, nics, software??). From
what you're saying, I don't think the problem is your Internet connection or
your dsl modem.

Turn off your firewall and try browsing your network with your dsl modem
disconnected. Your router should blink and you should have a link light on
your NIC which tells you you're connecting to your router (turn off all
encryption). If you see other computers on your network, then it's probably
not your router (but check MS's site for updates).

Third, try connecting to your dsl modem directly (bypassing your router).
You just want to check (quickly) if you have an Internet connection. If you
do, then your problem might be the router or the router's configuration. ( I
don't think it's the router)

fourth, if the problem doesn't seem to be the router or dsl modem or
firewall, try uninstalling XP's SP1. I'm guessing it's XP since you say
you're dropping the icon in Network Connections folder.

Try the easiest one's first (like testing another good computer), connecting
directly to the dsl modem and updating your router's firmware.

I hope i'm not saying anything wrong.
=)
