Issue 1:
Too many icons in taskbar.
Start: Run: msconfig - startup tab. You need to uncheck
some of these programs running in the background. Only
uncheck the ones that you KNOW you do not need. I like to
disable Dell add-on programs from my Dell pc, for
instance.
Also, you should delete items from your startup list
(start, all programs, startup).
This will clear up some of the icons in your taskbar.

Issue 2:
Show Desktop icon.
Right-click on the taskbar, go to properties.
Check the "show quick launch bar" box.
OK.
Magically, it appears!
