Hi All,
Sorry for the generic question but I have 2 on board 10/100 Ethernet cards
on these machines, connected by a cable (rj45 I think). Have gone through
the Networking wizards, have both machines fully ms updated and they still
can't see each other. The 2nd m/c can access the internet through the host
and that's all we can do. 2nd m/c is very SLOOOOOOWWWW and after going
through all the posts here today, I can't find any reference to help me
:( The websites that are proffered aren't working and I'm nearly ready for
a hissy fit ;) Would somebody please advise me on where to go from here,
please! Ideally all I want is to be able to play games against friends when
they visit and access the internet occasionally,
kind regards
Rob
p.s. m/c 1 - 1.0Ghz 512Mb Aopen M/B
m/c 2 - 633MHz 128Mb Aopen M/B

1. Disable the firewall on both PC's
2. Set up accounts on both PC's for all users you want to have access to
the network. Username and Password must be the same on each PC.
3. Assign the same workgroup name to both PC's.
4. Are you using Dial up or Cable/DSL Internet connection? You need a
router for Cable/DSL.
5. Are you go you going through a hub or switch to connect the 2 PC's?
If not, you need a crossover cable.
6. Go to Start/Run, type cmd click OK. Now at the cmd prompt type
ipconfig /all Are the IP addresses in the same subnet
mask? At the IP address the first 3 groups should be the same but the last
group can be anywhere from 1- 255.
Let us know what you find out.

Another thing to consider, purely from the gaming point, is that games
usually require that you use a protocol other than TCP/IP which is reserved
for your internet connection. Some games install the protocol for you when
you select 'LAN game' but some don't.
The usual protocol for playing games across a LAN is 'IPX/SPX' protocol.
To install this protocol go to Network connections and right click the icon
of your network connection then click properties. In the general info box
you will see a list of installed protocols and services. If IPX/SPX is not
listed then you have to add it.
To do this click 'install' another box will open and in this box click
'protocol' and click 'Add'. In the next box highlight 'IPX/SPX' then click
'Ok'.
Do this on both machines.
