multiple phantom network devices

I've installed a new network card and
it comes up as network connection #3.

The original one was #1, the second one the same
card in a different slot and the new one #3.

How do I get rid of these old ones - they are
getting in the way of other stuff?

If the cards are no longer in the PC you should be able to right click
on them and delete them. Then you can right click on the one you are using
and rename it #1 or whatever you want.
