XP and Media Player

Every time I try to open a file or application the
computer tries to open it using Windows Media Player.
With files, it's no issue because I can "open with...",
but I can't open any programs, including Windows programs
without them failing because "Windows Media Player does
not support this type of file". Any suggestions?

Sounds like the file associations are messed up. You can change them by
right clicking the executable or file, choosing Open With, Choose Program
and then clicking the check box that says Always open with this application.
