View Full Version : XP - How to unlicense one machine and license on new
mike

Now that I have been running XP Pro on my home computer
for several months I have decided to replace that system
with a new desktop. Would like to unlicense XP from the
old machine and re-install XP Pro on my new desktop as I
can purchase it without an operating system. How do I do
this?
thanks, Mike

If the XP Pro on the old desktop is a retail CD, all that is necessary is
to remove XP from the old machine and install it on the new one.
Once the new machine is up and running the way you want, connect to the
internet and run the activation.
If it's been 120 days or more since you've last activated this copy, the
activation should be automatic.
If less, you will be prompted to call MS. Follow the on screen prompts
which will ask you to select a country and will then display a phone
number. Leave the screen with the long hash number up on the monitor and
make the call.
You might get the automated activation response where you tap in the
numbers on your screen. Then the automated voice reads numbers back for you
to type in. If you get a real live person, tell them you've just
transferred your copy of XP to a new computer. The exchange of numbers
happens next and then you're set to go.

Sharon has given you the instructions. However if XP came preinstalled to
the laptop then it is likely an OEM version in which case you cannot legally
install it to any other system. OEM versions are tied to the first system
they are installed on. Some OEM versions are BIOS locked and will not even
accept installation on another system.

Harry:
I must be blind. Where are you reading laptop. I can not find it referred to
anywhere, except in your reply.
Just curious.
