View Full Version : Want to terminate undesired font and DLL installation attempts

I visited a bilingual website (Korean/English,
www.leadis.com) and clicked on the front page button that
said "English". This immediately triggered an UNPROMPTED
avalanche of downloads. I pressed "Cancel", but this did
not stop the cascade (possibly 100 files or more?). As
the file names flashed past, I noticed that many were
either fonts or DLLs.
Ever since this font/DLL cascade, any time I launch a
Microsoft application (Word, Excel, etc.), I get an
installer message box, which then requests SETUP.MSI from
my startup disk. I don't put in the disk, since I don't
want to install any of the useless Korean fonts or scary
DLLs. After several dialogue or error boxes, the
application finally launches.
I don't want to do-si-do with the installer for the rest
of my life. So...
1) How can I stop the Installer from trying to install
these fonts and DLLs?
2) How can I thoroughly purge these fonts and DLLs from
my computer?
3) How can I use security measures to prevent this kind
of unwanted downloading in the future?
My setup:
Windows XP Home
Sony Vaio PCG-VX89
Browser IE 6.0 with medium Internet security settings
Thanks so much to the wise and kind person out there who
can help me solve my problem.

I'll only answer the one i think i know... #3. Internet options >> advanced
>> uncheck both install on demands.

Thanks, The Stare. I'll try your approach for #3.
Meanwhile, I still have a problem with the installer
repeatedly firing up. Any help out there?

If you are brave enough and antivirus is up to date...
Let it install and then see if it set an entry in the add/remove programs.
If it turns out to be spyware, a program like Ad-Aware will clean it out if
it isn't in add/remove.
If it is just a foreign language pack to properly display foreign
characters, it will do no harm.

Thank you, The Stare. I suppose I can go dig out the XP
CD and try that.

While you are at it, copy it to your hard drive so you don't need to find it
again.
