I purchased a windows xp with the understanding that it
would work on windows 98 second addition. When I started
to install it the installation stopped when I got to the
question "to install adaptability to the internet" at
which point I said "not now". At that point the computer
refused to continue. Then it said that I should reinstall
windows 98. I installed the disc I received from the firm
from whom I purchased the computer and began installing
the program and everything was going along fine until I
got to product key and there was none available. The
firm has said I did'nt need it but my computer now shuts
down and refuses to reopen. I found another windows 98
disc that has a product key however my computer refuses
to recognize the new disc for installation. What can I do?
I am just an amatuer so please make my answer simple.

If you are reinstalling Windows 98, start with a Windows 98 boot disk, if
you don't have one, go to www.bootdisk.com and create one. Boot from the
disk, format the drive and install Windows 98. Once 98 is reinstalled and
you are at the 98 desktop, place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup
screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility."

If the report comes up with anything, you need to resolve those issues,
regardless of how small or innocuous seeming before installing XP.
