Accumulating Wireless Adapter Numbers

How do I eliminate accumulating wireless adapter numbers
in Windows XP? I attempted to install a Linksys Wireless
Adapter several times until I realized that the driver
version and configuration utility were not compatible
with Windows XP. Each time I installed the adapter, the
adapter number increased even though I thought the
previous version was completely uninstalled. Do I need
to edit the registry in order to revert the adapter
number to #1?

Any assistance would be greatly apprecieated.
