View Full Version : reinstalling WinXP

I've been having probs with pc (Dell Dimension 8200, 3.05
G,Radeon 9700 pro graphics card, 512 DDRAM, built in
audio card). little errors keep popping up from CT helper
and Support; I tried installing my audio card (Sound
blaster Audigy MP3) with uptodate drivers, and errors
came up about compability, but ignored them, and in the
end, didn't work. Removed the audio card. vid card was
starting to act up, fickering on reboot, lagging with
frame of a window i'm trying to move, etc. etc. etc. All
little things that add up to a pain in the arse.

I want to do a simple scrub on the partitioned part of HD
that holds OS seperate from dled stuff(used Partition
Magic for that one) and reinstall XP fresh. but when we
get into the nitty gritty of it all, I get asked for a
password. which password would THAT be? I've tried the
only two i have on pc, and when it doesn't accept it, it
seems to go into repair mode, but it's a waste of time
because nothing is resolved.

I have posted this before and yes, I have to admit that
though I've been pretty vague before, once i clarify
myself, I'm confused by the answers such as WHY WOULD YOU
WANT TO DO THAT (cuz i need to), USE YOUR CD (I did and i
STILL don't know what the password is).

I know I'm sounding a little frustrated here, but I value
your opinion if I can some help.

Can anyone help with this reinstall?

thanks in advance, Pussn

? Boot from the CD, delete your current C:\ partition and reformat it using
the NTFS file system, proceed with install. The "password" you might be
thinking of is your Product Key. It can be found in a label on your case,
or on the case that your Windows Install CD came in.

ty Quitin,
I do boot from from the CD...i never ever get as far as
deleting the parition and formatting it...but I will give
it a shot with the product code. Can i get back to you
later this week with my results? I sure would like to
resolve this. WinME was a pig, but at least if I kicked
it around a few times, it behaved.

Pussn,

Have you tried to use the "Tab" key and bypass the password field? If you
didn't use one when installing the OS, you just bypass the field. If you did
use one, it will be the same as the Admin password.
